Funland is a family-owned amusement park on the boardwalk at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. It stretches an entire block along the boardwalk and about as far down Delaware and Brooklyn Avenues on either side.
Left: Nicky and myself with Al Fasnacht, who has ran the park since 1962 with the help of three generations of his family and hundreds of employees from over the world. Also pictured is Craig, Al's eldest son, as the family typically look while the park is closed and they busy themselves maintaining rides, games and the grounds of the park.
Below is part of "Kiddy Row" (the rides for the younger children) on a typical summer day, when most people are on the beach.
Above is a view from Paratrooper, looking back at the swinging Sea Dragon and children's play area.
Part of a dorm guy's duties is to empty the garbage cans and sweep the park each night, a task that doesn't
take long if well coordinated with many men.
A staff meeting is held every Sunday evening (photo on left), after which everyone enjoys pizza at Nicola Pizza.
Dorm guys earn a fixed weekly salary and are accommodated in dormitories above the park and provided with meals
and refreshments.
That window with the best view in town is our living area.
Nancy has the best job in the world. She's cooked and cleaned for the dorm guys (among many other things) for a few summers now. Funland would not be the same without her and she is considered by most to be a part of the family.
Meal times in the dorm is the best part of my day. Except when Nancy bakes beans.
Sunset over Funland.
Every summer Funland invites the contestants of the Miss Delaware pageant to the park to have some fun as they prepare for the contest that is staged in Rehoboth.
