United States of America - 1999, 2000 and 2001
Where It All Began
June 21st, 1999, I boarded a jet-plane for the first time in my life, at
the age of 20, bound for New York City.
Having begun the process of arranging the summer ahead, spending Easter break
at home in Wales, I received an unexpected call from a good friend who I sat
through Maths lectures at Sheffield with.
Charlotte said she'd also like to spend a summer in the USA and that she'd
appreciate me helping her arrange it. Her exact words had been "We won't
work in the same place, but we can sit next to eachother on the plane." We
worked together the whole summer and have never sat next to eachother on any
plane!
I'd been unable to choose where in the huge country I'd prefer to spend the
summer nor what kind of job I'd rather do. Working in an amusement park was
Charlotte's idea and after looking at the job offers we got we decided to go
to Funland, a park in a strange-named town in one of the smallest and least-known
states.
I worked at Funland (in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware) the whole summer, the following
summer, and the one after that.

During my time in the USA I have...
- twice traversed the country by land
- partied with friends at three universities
- been to the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City
- seen The Beach Boys live in Las Vegas
- paddled alongside playful dolphins in the Atlantic Ocean
- spent a day in the life of high-school student
- visited New York City, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Ocean City, Atlantic
City, Chicago, Ithaca, Nashville, Denver, Boulder, Flagstaff, The Grand Canyon,
Las Vegas, Hollywood, Los Angeles and San Fransisco
- passed through Pittsburg, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Albuquerque, Colorado
Springs, Omaha
and many many more cities, towns and countryside
