Fukuoka - July 30-August 2, 2003

Japan is known as the Land of the Rising Sun. I can understand why, as the sun rose every night before I'd even got back to bed.

I took the budget option and stayed in a capsule hotel in the Tenjin area of the city, very close to many of the city's popular bars.

Aled's CapsuleI had read that my capsule would be two meters long and only a meter wide and high. As you can see from the photo, this turned out to be quite accurate.

Sleeping in such a confined space seemed no different from having a huge bed in a large accomodating room (as soon as your eyes were closed of course). There's a TV, radio, alarm clock and dimming light in there too.

For under ¥4,000 per night, I also got unlimited use of the men's sauna, hot and cold tubs, showers, bathrooms, dressing rooms, locker rooms and another room for face-, hair-, teeth- and nail-care, and supplied with all the soaps and lotions, razors and toothbrushes a man might need.

ACROS Fukuoka building

This is the ACROS Fukuoka building facing Tenjin Central Park. It is a known landmark in the city due to it's step garden and that it houses concert halls, offices, commercial outlets and restaurants.

Canal City

Another point of interest is Canal City. A great shopping and dining atmosphere is created by the flowing water, fountains and the modern architecture of the buildings.

Tombstones

This photo was taken at the Sumyoshi Shrine and shows Japanese tombstones, with the shrine in the background.

Fukuoka Speedboat Stadium
The Fukuoka Speedboat Stadium. There were no races on the day I passed by.

Old Japanese Ship

I thought this vessel was worth a photo.

FireworksMy third and final night of my visit was the evening of Fukuoka's annual firework festival. I had seen many thousands of Japanese women in the downtown Tenjin area dressed in their traditional summer yukatasRyoko, Aled and Junkoand decided to freshen up back at the hotel before going to see the fireworks. Due to the above mentioned facilities at my hotel, I spent a couple of hours freshening up and missed the (apparently) 6000 fireworks that were fired over an hour and a half.

Junko took this photo
on her telephone.

I spent the night in the company of Rioko and Junko and hit many of Tenjin's bars that are popular among the large international community of Fukuoka, as well as many local Japanese.

Junko and the Bear

These balloons were given out and Junko requested that I bend it into the shape of a bear.

Here, she is modelling the result of my effort.

With a keen eye and a little imagination you can make out the legs, head, body and tail of...

A bear, of course!

But, nothing lasts for ever.

Later, the bear had become a hugely popular fashion accessory.
