Fukuoka - July 30-August 2, 2003

Page 1

I decided to head to Japan for as long (or as little) as my money would last, with no real plans or any ideas what to do when I got there.

On the right is a picture of the Beetle, a jet-foil watercraft that rises from the water to travel at 45 knots between Busan (Korea) and Fukuoka (Japan).

The photo below shows the view of Fukuoka as you approach land. It is easy to make out the Fukuoka Dome, while Fukuoka Tower (the tall and narrow building), Japan's tallest coastal tower, is less clearly visible.

Fukuoka

It was Wednesday evening when I arrived and by the time I had found an ATM that cooperated by giving me money I had bumped into Ian and Joelle, two of my colleagues in Korea.

Instead of finding a place to stay, I joined them for dinner. And a few drinks at a bar...

I was soon on stage at the Happy Cock in a yellow afro wig and over-sized green bow tie competing for a prize of ¥10,000! Round 1 was a race to drink a draught beer - with a peg on our noses! I didn't think this would be difficult and was ahead until my glass was tipped as far as

it would without knocking off the peg so I had to tip my head back to finish and subsequently lost. (TIP: If you ever find yourself in the same situation, place the peg as vertical as you can so as to give you more space to tip the glass.)

I had fallen at the first hurdle...

but got a free tequila shot for my effort!

Joelle and a guyWe all made the most of the ¥100-a-beer offer while it lasted before paying ¥1500 for two more hours' worth of beer on tap. The following photos reflect the state we were subsequently in.

Meanwhile, I was channeling my energy
into more useful activities:

Putting smiles on the faces of beautiful
Japanese women!

Ladies dancing on bar tops. This is one criteria that makes the difference between a good bar and a great one, I think.

Here's Adam, Ian and Joelle (in my face!).

I wonder if Ian sat on something uncomfortable that hit a sensitive spot?!

Adam was also visiting from Korea.

I kept trying, but to no avail.

Aled Powell and Megumi MatsuoMy second night was a lot more relaxed as the thought of having to repeat the recovery from the night before caused me to stay sober(ish).

I'm joined in this photo at The Dark Room by Megumi - one of many cool people I met.
